IUP Baseball Summer Success

Two members of the IUP baseball team, Robbie Zinsmeister and Stephen Cooke, were selected as collegiate summer league all-stars this past week.

Zinsmeister, of the Quakertown Blazers in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, was selected as the shortstop for the West squad. The ACBL all-star game was played July 12, 2010, on the campus of St. John’s University in New York. Zinsmester is hitting .300 and leads his team in runs, hits, triples, stolen bases, and RBIs.

Cooke pitches for the Winchester Royals of the Virginia Valley Baseball League. Selected as an all-star for the North squad, Cooke has made twelve appearances on the mound and posted a 4-1 record. The Valley League all-star game was July 11 at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. Cooke was a PSAC first-team closer for IUP this past season.

In professional baseball, IUP alumnus Paul Bingham is currently hitting .375 for the San Diego Padres’ Arizona Rookie League team. He leads his team and is sixth overall in the league in batting average. He was drafted by the Padres in the twentieth round of the Major League Baseball draft this past June after completing a record-setting four-year career at IUP, which included being named PSAC Player of the Year and First-Team All-American.
