Hispanic Heritage Council Announces Successful Spring Celebration and Fundraiser

The Hispanic Heritage Council’s Spring 2010 Celebration raised a total of $2,713 for Ms. Berenice Lopez-Gomez to help offset her medical expenses.

The Office of Social Equity and Civic Engagement, along with the Hispanic Heritage Council, would like to thank everyone who participated in the Spring Celebration/Fundraiser held Saturday, April 10, in the Crimson Event Center. Contributors and attendees alike raised money to help offset the costs of Berenice’s medical expenses.

Berenice was struck with an illness in February 2010 while studying abroad in Puebla, Mexico. The illness left her in a coma and with failing kidney function. She awoke from the coma in March, and is currently on dialysis with hopes of a full recovery. If the kidneys do not respond, a transplant may be necessary.

Dr. Lydia Rodriguez, Hispanic Heritage Council chair, set up a PayPal account in order to accept donations for Berenice. Pastor Melvin Jenkins from the Victory Christian Assembly Church, along with his congregation, donated over $300 to the help Bere.

A fabulous time was had by all who attended the event in April. A special “Thank You” to all who helped organize, plan, and coordinate this event, including the Ritmo Latino Dance Crew, who were the featured performers for the evening; plus Carmy and Jose Carranza, Jose Rivera, and J.J. Ramos, who provided dance workshops for the event.

The Hispanic Heritage Council would also like to recognize Taco Bell of Indiana, the Center for Civic Engagement, the students of LaSO, IUP Library (Doug Shumar), and Cozumel Mexican Restaurant for their contribution in helping to make this event a success! Bien hecho!
