Library and Technology Orientation for Graduate Students

Are you completely comfortable with new computer technologies? How do those on-line databases really work? What can the library and technology staff do to make your life easier? Find the answer to these (and many other questions) at the special Library and Technology Orientation program—specifically for graduate students—on June 1, 2010, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Stapleton/Stabley Library facility.

Attend any or all of the sessions, or just come to explore on your own. Personnel will be available to guide you on your way to academic success!

Workshop Sessions (Stabley 201 – Learning Lab)

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

  • 1:00–1:50 p.m. — Technology at IUP: Staff from the Information Technology Support Center will show you how to make the best use of your IUP computing accounts, including topics such as URSA (University Records and Systems Assistant), VPN (Virtual Private Network), wireless access, user IDs and passwords, shared disk storage space, Moodle, and other services.
  • 2:00–2:50 p.m. — The Virtual Library: Take a librarian-guided tour of the library’s on-line resources, including the PILOT on-line catalog and a wide range of subject-specific databases. Learn techniques for finding what you really want.
  • 3:00–3:50 p.m. — Library Services: “Ask not what you can do for your library—Ask what the library can do for you!” Staff from several library service points will introduce and answer questions about essential library services that will support and enhance your research and study at IUP. Topics include Reserve, Interlibrary Loan, Reference, Circulation, Library Technology, Special Collections, and other services.
  • 4:00–4:50 p.m. — EndNote: This bibliographic management software can help tame the beast out of control references and citations as you are doing research. EndNote lets you build your own database of citations so that you can find your research materials quickly and easily, insert references in your papers seamlessly, and format those citations in any style (APA, MLA, etc.) at the click of a button. Get the scoop from our resident EndNote expert.

Tours: Short tours (20–25 minutes) will commence at the library lobby every half hour from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. Your guide will show you around the library facility and point out resources and services that are essential for graduate students. Staff from the various service points will be available for in-depth discussion and answers.
