Chalk Contest 2010 Winners Announced

The annual Sidewalk Commentary Contest, a.k.a. “Chalk-on-the-Walk,” was held on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, with awards announced at the end of the day. The contest was organized by the campus chapter of the National Art Education Association (NAEA), along with the College of Fine Arts.

Chalk-on-the-Walk has become an all-campus tradition involving hundreds of students and employees participating and several hundred more viewing the dozens of incredible entries on the walks of the Oak Grove throughout the day. The contest has always served as a vehicle for students to express their political and social views through drawings across the Oak Grove.

Chalk Winner 2The contest is funded, in part, by the IUP Student Cooperative Association, with additional donations provided by IUP Communications, The Lively Arts, Common Freshman Reader program, Lea Massiello, and Susan Palmisano.

Judges were Toni Apryasz, Judy Bouton, Patti Cornman, Susan Dawkins , Linda Dreischalick, Lisa Holmes, Cara Houser, Rick Kutz, Karen Pizarchik, Teresa Spearman, Susan Stossel, and Sherri Yachup.

The winners of this year's contest are as follows:

  • First Place: Maurice Jackson, Art, senior, Philadelphia, Pa. (above right)
  • Second Place: Lauren Cruz, Art, junior, Philadelphia, Pa. (above left)
  • ThirdChalk Winner 3 Place: Morgan Foster, Communications Media, St. Marys, Pa. (right)
  • Social Issues: Mary OÕBrien, Theater, sophomore, Fairfax, Va.
  • Political Issues: Hayley Faight, Theater, senior, Johnstown, Pa.
  • Diversity Issues: Katie Bebar, Art Education, junior, Greensburg, Pa.
  • Health and Education: Brandon Baskerville, Art, junior, Reading, Pa.
  • Human Rights: Stephen Harvey, Theater, Richmond, Va.
  • Freshman Common Reader: Annie Shearer, Fashion Merchandising, freshman, Johnstown, Pa.
  • Paige McFarland, Psychology, freshman, Schnecksville, Pa.
  • NAEA Choice: Matthew Pekala, Art, sophomore, Windber, Pa.
  • Rebecca Mir, Art, Delmar, Md.
