Award-Winning Student Director to Direct “Bat Boy” at IUP

Theater major Nick Hrutkay traveled to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., this month as the Region II representative in directing for the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Hrutkay was the only undergraduate student selected from hundreds of schools across the nation for this prestigious honor.

Hrutkay experienced a week of intensive workshops, panel discussions, and presentations from professionals, including Libby Appel, former artistic director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Returning to IUP to finish his semester, Hrutkay is also auditioning and beginning work directing a studio production of the musical Bat Boy for the IUP summer community. Bat Boy is an irreverent, rock-musical look at prejudice ripped from the pages of the National Enquirer.

Hrutkay will also be directing Seussical the Musical for Footlight Players, the Theater and Dance Department’s service outreach to the Indiana area through a theater-for-youth summer camp.
