Hawk’s Nest provides the latest information about IUP sports teams for the Spring 2010 season:
Soccer player Sarah Romasco and baseball pitcher Jake Rougeaux were selected IUP’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year for their work on the field and in the classroom and the community. The duo was honored at IUP’s annual All-American and Scholar-Athletes Dinner held on campus recently.
Romasco, a graduate of Ambridge High School in Freedom, Pa., will graduate with honors from IUP next month with a degree in math education. She has been on the dean’s list in all seven semesters and entered the spring with a cumulative grade point average of 3.77. During her undergraduate career, Romasco has received both the Mildred Reigh and Arthur G. Morrell memorial math scholarships.
On the field, Romasco rewrote the IUP soccer record book. She is the school’s career leader with 65 goals scored, 40 assists, and 170 points while playing in 87 games, the most of any player in program history. She had season goal totals of 21 as a freshman and 20 as a sophomore to rank second and third, respectively, among IUP season leaders and led the team in assists all four years.
Rougeaux, who graduated from Indiana High School, is a geographical information system and cartography major and boasted a cumulative grade point average of 3.97 entering the current semester, including a perfect 4.0 GPA in six of seven semesters. He has been an IUP Provost Scholar and the recipient of the Burchfield Academic Scholarship.
Rougeaux will earn his bachelor’s degree in December and plans to attend graduate school to study environmental sustainability.
On the diamond, the lefthander has appeared in 38 games, tied for the fifth most in school history, and has been credited with seven wins. A versatile pitcher who can start and come in out of the bullpen, Rougeaux has thrown three complete games among his 24 career starts.
Both have extensive volunteer service hours.
In Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action, IUP and California are tied for the top spot in the west division with 15-5 records, but the Crimson Hawks hold the tiebreaker edge by winning three of four from the Vulcans this weekend. Mercyhurst moved into third place at 12-7 with a doubleheader sweep over Slippery Rock. IUP plays several games with Gannon this week.
Last year's national champion, Gavin Smith, playing his final official round at the Indiana Country Club as a member of the IUP golf team, shot a 4-under par 67 to edge Ryan Terdik of Concord by one stroke for medalist honors and lead the Crimson Hawks to the team title at the recent IUP-Cecil Spadafora Invitational.
Stephanie Bianco led the lacrosse team past the Seton Hill Griffins 14-13 earlier this week at Miller Stadium with three goals on Senior Day. Seton Hill rallied to tie the game late in the second half but fell to 7-5 on the season, while IUP improved to 7-8 overall.
Erin Holloway broke her own IUP single-season strikeout mark, and Megan McCormick continued her assault on the school record book to earn PSAC Central Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, for the final week of the regular season. The Crimson Hawks host open the PSAC playoffs vs. East Stroudsburg Friday at California.
The Crimson Hawks concluded the regular season 16-8 overall. IUP is ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region and is currently awaiting an invitation to the regional tournament.
