Pa. State Treasurer McCord Visits Eberly College

On Tuesday, March 16, 2010, the Student Finance Association of the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology hosted Pennsylvania State Treasurer Rob McCord. McCord spoke with several hundred students about his career in investment banking, as well his career as an elected public official.

Treasurer McCord held a lengthy question and answer session with students addressing Commonwealth public finance issues such as taxation, lottery revenue, slot machine revenue, property tax revenue, and economic development issues.

A respected business leader and entrepreneur, Rob McCord took office as the forty-fifth treasurer of Pennsylvania on January 20, 2009. Today, as chief executive of the Pennsylvania Treasury Department, Treasurer McCord helps invest more than $80 billion per year and oversees a broad variety of operations designed to improve the economic security of Pennsylvanians.

Treasurer McCord has brought unusual financial acumen to his elected office and works innovatively to provide strong financial returns for all Pennsylvanians. He has helped generate billions of dollars in improved returns for Pennsylvania’s pension funds and 529 college savings program.

Throughout his career, Treasurer McCord has fought for productive investments and public policies. Prior to his election as treasurer, his work as a venture capitalist helped generate more than 2,000 jobs. From 1994 and 2007, Treasurer McCord worked as a senior executive at Safeguard Scientifics, and he founded the Eastern Technology Fund and served as cofounder and managing director of Pennsylvania Early Stage Partners. In addition, from 1996 through 2007, he led the Eastern Technology Council, a trade association that served hundreds of fast-growing companies.

Before joining the private sector, Treasurer McCord worked on Capitol Hill, where he specialized in budget and technology issues. He also served as the CEO of the bipartisan think tank Congressional Institute for the Future.

Treasurer McCord earned his undergraduate degree in economics and history at Harvard University, and he earned his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Montgomery County with his wife and two sons.
