Geography Students Participate in Service Learning Projects

Students in Dr. John Benhart’s Technical Issues in GIS course (GEOG 417/517) are participating in service learning-oriented geographic information system (GIS) development projects during the Spring 2010 semester. The focus of the course is for students to learn methods for determining the scope of GIS projects, as well as advanced spatial data development techniques.

Class projects for the Spring 2010 semester include:

  • A system designed to determine the amount of “overburden” or geologic material between previously-mined (underground) coal seams and the surface of the earth (students Bawa Awumbila, Mary Kopistecki, Heather Nunn, and Daniel Sunseri) in cooperation with the Institute for Mine Mapping Archival Procedures and Safety at IUP
  • Spatial data development in support of the IUP Campus Master Planning initiative (students Paul Bingham, Andrew King, Germaine McArdle, and Shawn Wiley) in conjunction with JJR Consultants of Ann Arbor, Michigan
  • A geographic analysis of the distribution of “nuisance properties” in Indiana Borough, Pennsylvania (students Zach Afshar, Tetsuya Iwase, Ayanda Masilela, and Mark Turner), in cooperation with Indiana County Office of Planning and Economic Development and Indiana Borough
  • The Indiana County Regional Trail Connectivity study—a project designed to identify geographic alternatives for the connection of the West Penn and Hoodlebug (recreational) Trails in the vicinity of Blairsville, Pennsylvania (students Thomas Angelo, Devin Creighton, and Tye Desiderio), with partners the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and Indiana County Office of Planning and Economic Development
  • A system to analyze matriculation patterns of freshmen students to IUP and to determine a geographically-based attendance “demand” measure for high school students in Pennsylvania for undergraduate attendance at IUP (students Scott Dunn, Eric Nystrom, Nkemka Uche, and Andrew Young) in cooperation with the IUP Office of Admissions.
