Several members of IUP at Punxsutawney’s learning community, Reading and Writing for the Dream, organized a debate night for the student body on February 17, 2010. The students publicized the event, planned topics, and decided on format.
With input from the audience, students debated with gusto such hot-button topics as the double standard and the legalization of marijuana. Arguments became quite heated at times, especially during the one-minute crossfire. Professors served as judges, declaring the winning side for each debate based on the strength of the arguments. Everyone had a great time, and the students practiced their public speaking skills at the same time.
