“Sweet Charity” Opens in Fisher February 25

Sweet Charity

Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Theater-by-the-Grove and Music Theater will jointly present the musical comedy Sweet Charity in Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts Center, Fisher Auditorium. Performances will be held Thursday, February 25, 2010, through Saturday, February 27, at 8:00 p.m. A matinee is also scheduled for Sunday, February 28, at 2:00 p.m.

Based on the book by Neil Simon with lyrics by Dorothy Fields and music by Cy Coleman, Sweet Charity is the story of Charity Hope Valentine, the Fan-Dango Ballroom dance hostess. Valentine is an eternal optimist, a dreamer, and a bit of a chump. Her middle name certainly describes her, as she is always in vigorous pursuit of love.

Set in 1960’s New York, Sweet Charity is a classic musical in every sense of the word. Coleman’s tremendous score includes the memorable musical hit numbers “Big Spender,” “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” and “Baby, Dream Your Dream.” Fields’ urban vernacular in the lyrics perfectly captures 1960’s New York. This is all set against Neil Simon’s overwhelming talent for quick wit and rapid-fire dialogue.

“I feel a bit biased about this show,” said director and IUP theater faculty member Rob Gretta. “I have always been a great fan of Bob Fosse, who directed the stage and screen versions. Ever since I saw the movie with Shirley MacLaine, I have wanted to direct it on stage. The show is going to be a wonderful experience for everyone.”

Tickets for Sweet Charity are available now at the Hadley Union Building ticket office on the IUP campus or can be purchased with a credit card by calling the HUB Ticket Office at 724-357-1313. Remaining tickets can be purchased at the door one hour prior to the start of the performance. Tickets are $15 for regular admission, $13 for seniors (62 and older) and for groups of fifteen or more, and $9 for students. The production contains strong situations that may not be appropriate for younger children.
