January 2010 Sports Update

Hawk’s Nest provides the latest information about IUP sports teams for the start of the Spring season:

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball team, ranked ninth in country in the National Association of Basketball Coaches poll, is off to one of its best starts in school history, winning thirteen of its first fourteen games.

Darryl Webb has been named the PSAC West Player of the Week three times this season and recently became the twenty-fifth player in school history to score 1,000 career points.

Women’s Basketball

The Crimson Hawks are riding a three-game winning streak and are 2-0 in the PSAC West for the fourth straight year.

Lacey Claar set a school record with seven three-pointers in a win over Clarion, and Sarah Pastorek made game-winning shots against both Clarion and Mercyhurst and is the reigning PSAC West Freshman of the Week.

Indoor Track and Field

Kevin Raymond has been a standout in each of the first two meets of the season and has provisionally qualified for nationals in both the 60- and 200-meter dashes. A 2009 outdoor All-American in the 400 meters, Raymond was the first PSAC Track Athlete of the Week for the indoor season.

Football

Akwasi Owusu-Ansah was named a first team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association and D2Football.com. He received an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine that will take place starting in late February in Indianapolis—an opportunity to showcase his skills for more than six hundred NFL personnel in attendance.

Baseball

Catcher T.J. Nichols was chosen for the preseason All-America first team of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, while shortstop Paul Bingham and pitcher Colby Betz were honorable mention selections. Only three schools had more players on the team than IUP.
