The IUP Department of Music and Indiana Free Library are collaborating on a three-part performance of Lewis Carroll’s classic, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. With an original score by Alec Wilder, the IUP Faculty Woodwind Quintet will play, as Michael Hood (pictured below), dean of Fine Arts, recites and sings the work over three consecutive Saturdays starting December 5, 2009.

The performances will be presented in the lower level of the Indiana Free Library, located along Philadelphia Street at Oakland Avenue. Admission is free, but due to limited seating, the Indiana Free Library requests that all seats be reserved in advance by calling 724-465-8841. It is also requested that only children over the age of five be brought to the performances.

The book, first released in 1865, and music score were first recorded together in 1957 and issued on four records through the Riverside Records label. Cyril Ritchard read and sang the script while the New York Woodwind Quintet played the music.

Michael HoodThe IUP project is led by John Kuehn, professor of music and coordinator of music education at IUP. The publishers of the music informed Kuehn that, to their knowledge, the presentation at the Indiana Free Library will be the first public performance of the complete work.

The Faculty Woodwind Quintet includes Therese Wacker, flute; Stephanie Caulder, oboe; Kuehn, clarinet; Jason Worzbyt, bassoon; and Jack Scandrett, horn. Michael Kingan, percussion, will join the quintet.

Each performance will be from 11:00 a.m. to noon, with chapters 1–4 performed on December 5, chapters 5–8 performed December 12; and chapters 9–12 performed on December 19.
