2009 Tree-Lighting Ceremony Set for December 2

Indiana University of Pennsylvania will celebrate the holidays with its annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 2, 2009, at 4:45 p.m. on the East Porch of John Sutton Hall.

The IUP Chamber Singers, under the direction of James Dearing, will sing “Silent Night” for the lighting of the tree. Their final selection is “Masters in This Hall.”

The IUP Brass Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Christian Dickinson, also will perform during the event.

The East Pike Elementary School Vocal Ensemble, directed by Debbie Sasala, will sing “This Winter Holiday” and “The Snow Begins To Fall.”

IUP’s Crimson Hawk mascot, Norm, will flip the switch to light the trees.

Seasonal refreshments will be served immediately following the ceremony in the Blue Room, located on the first floor of Sutton Hall.

The university’s tree-decorating contest continues for the fifth year. Fifteen fir trees, donated by the Indiana County Bar Association, are being sponsored by IUP and community groups and businesses.

Trees will be set up in the Blue Room. Fleming’s Christmas Tree Farms donated tree-harvesting services and provided the trees and stands at wholesale prices to the bar association.

IUP students who are members of fraternities and sororities, the Mortar Board Honor Society, and the IUP Ambassadors will be responsible for decorating the trees this year.

Spectators can vote for a favorite decorated tree with monetary donations (a dollar equals one vote). All funds raised during the voting will be donated to an IUP scholarship fund to recognize students who exhibit leadership and take part in community volunteer service.

Those who vote are eligible to win the tree sponsored and decorated by Dr. Tony Atwater, IUP president, and his wife, Dr. Beverly Roberts-Atwater, but the remaining fourteen trees and decorations will be donated to families in the Salvation Army’s Treasures for Children program.

Sponsors for the event, in addition to the Atwaters, are Aramark Corporation, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Delaney of Delaney Chevrolet, Buick, Honda, Hyundai and Subaru; Downtown Indiana; Fleming’s Christmas Tree Farms; Gatti Pharmacy; Indiana County Bar Association; Indiana Regional Medical Center; IUP Ambassadors; IUP Interfraternity Council; IUP Student Cooperative Association; IUP Women’s Club; Mortar Board Honor Society; National Pan-Hellenic Council; Panhellenic Association; Quota International of Indiana, Pa., Inc.; Rotary Club of Indiana, Pa.; and the Honorable Donald C. White.

In addition to participating in the tree-decorating project, more than two hundred students from IUP’s fraternities and sororities raised more than $2,000 recently for the Treasures for Children holiday tree initiative. They will donate another $1,000 to the IUP scholarship fund connected with this initiative.
