Additional Student Seasonal Flu Vaccine Available

The Center for Health and Well-Being still has a limited number of doses of seasonal flu vaccine for student use. They are the nasal mist variety called FluMist™. This is sprayed into the nose rather than injected into the arm. It is indicated for healthy people aged two through forty-nine years of age. It is a safe and widely used vaccine to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza and decrease the chance of spreading influenza to others.

Because of its preparation using live (but weakened) virus, it is not suitable for some people. It is not indicated for people who have a history of:

  • asthma
  • heart disease
  • lung disease
  • diabetes
  • kidney or liver disease
  • immune disorders
  • current pregnancy or breast feeding

It will be available free of charge to any current IUP student on a first-come, first-served basis to those who meet the criteria listed above on. Because three clinics have already been held, students will need to visit the Health Service and sign in as a walk-in.

For questions about the vaccine, contact the Health Service. If you have questions about whether you should receive FluMistTM, contact your healthcare provider.
