Dr. John Wesley Lowery, associate professor of Student Affairs in Higher Education, presented a paper at the History of Education Society Annual Meeting with Karen Boyd, dean of Student Affairs at Carnegie Mellon University.
Their paper, “The Alabama State College Sit-ins and the Death of In Loco Parentis: Dixon v. Alabama State Board of Education (1961),” explores the demonstrations by Alabama State College students against legalized segregation in Montgomery and the resulting lawsuit which established the rights to due process for public school students facing suspension or expulsion.
