Native American Festival Celebrates American Indian Heritage Month

In celebration of National American Indian Heritage Month, the IUP Native American Awareness Council and the Office of Social Equity and Civic Engagement are sponsoring a free event, open to the community, on November 7, 2009.

The third annual Native American Festival will be held from noon to 5:00 p.m. at the IUP Hadley Union Building Delaware Room.

The featured attraction for the event is the Allegany River Indian Dancers, who will perform at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. The Drums of Native Sisters also will perform during the festival.

Arts and crafts vendors will have work on display, and food vendors will provide refreshments during the event.

In December 2006, the IUP Council of Trustees passed a resolution that the university would dedicate the month of November each year to promoting awareness of, and appreciation for, the history and culture of the region’s Native Americans.
