IUP’s Center for the Study of Labor Relations and the Department of Employment and Labor Relations are cosponsoring a one-day Conflict Resolution class to be held at the Rustic Lodge in Indiana, Pa., on Friday, December 11, 2009.

Conflict is defined as a “struggle” between two individuals or groups who perceive their goals as incompatible. This seminar is designed to address the two dimensions of conflict—the issue of the conflict and the emotions surrounding the conflict—and provides insight into how conflict can be managed and resolved.

Schedule

  • 8:45 a.m. — Part I: Understanding Conflict Resolution, Dimensions, and Four Types of Conflict
  • 10:15-10:30 a.m. — Break
  • 10:30 a.m. — Part II: Conflict Style, Influences and Positions, Alternatives: “BATNA,” Relationships, and Problem Solving Skills
  • Noon — Lunch
  • 1:00 p.m. — Part III: Consensual Decision: Making, Concepts, Creative Problem Solving, and Interest-Based Techniques
  • 2:45 p.m. — Q&A

Certification

Presenter: Dr. David Piper, D.Ed., Associate Professor, Employment and Labor Relations, IUP, Indiana, Pennsylvania
Dr. David M. Piper has been involved in public sector administration and labor relations since 1986. He started his career as the director of Business Affairs for the Bedford Area School District. In 1989, he moved to the Mount Union Area School District and held similar roles, being responsible for the districtwide business operations and the implementation of a computerized financial accounting, payroll, and child accounting package, as well as the negotiations and administration of all labor contracts. In addition, Dr. Piper served as the technology chair for the district and was the architect of Mount Union’s Making Connections for the Future, a project that provided major technology improvements to the classrooms and a professional development plan for the teachers of the junior-senior high school. This initiative received both the State and National Awards of Achievement from the Association of School Business Officials.

In 2001, Dr. Piper left Mount Union to become the assistant to the superintendent for the Altoona Area School District. During his tenure, Dr. Piper was the project leader for the creation of the Central Pennsylvania Digital Learning Foundation, a consortium of thirty-two public schools that created a digital public school that has 180 students enrolled.

In 2003, Dr. Piper joined the faculty of the Industrial and Labor Relations Department of Indiana University of Pennsylvania as an associate professor. He teaches courses in Conflict Resolution, Contract Administration, Human Resource Management, Organizational Leadership, Public Sector Labor Relations, Fundamentals of Labor Relations, School Finance, and Research and Statistics. In 2008, Dr. Piper coauthored the textbook Pennsylvania School Business: A Guide for Educational Administrators with Dale Keagy. He is also a practicing arbitrator and mediator for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor, Bureau of Mediation.

Dr. Piper has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Arts in Industrial and Labor Relations, and a Doctorate of Education in Administration and Leadership Studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Piper is actively involved with the Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials and the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education. He also serves as a guest speaker for topics including conflict resolution, dispute resolution, and organizational leadership. He is also a deputy coroner for Indiana County.
