The IUP Center for Counselor Training and Services (CCTS) will offer a workshop on self-injurious behaviors as the first of its Fall 2009 professional development series. The one-day workshop will be delivered by two noted experts in the field, Ms. Kim Poling and Dr. Tina Goldstein, and will be held at the CCAC-Boyce Campus Performance Auditorium on Friday, November 13, 2009, in Monroeville.

Ms. Poling serves as the clinical manager of the Services for Teens at Risk (STAR-Center), a specialty program for suicidal adolescents and a division of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Program of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Goldstein is a licensed psychologist and assistant professor in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine.

The one-day program entitled, “Helping Teens and Families Manage Self-Injurious Behaviors,” is designed for mental health professionals, school counselors, college educators, and students.

This workshop will cover such items as distinguishing suicidal behavior from self-injurious behavior, identifying the motivations behind self-injurious behavior, and how to aid families of children who self-injure.

The workshop is coordinated by the Center for Counselor Training and Services, an IUP center that offers professional workshops and training for community and school counselors and other mental health professionals throughout the region. The center is directed by Dr. John McCarthy, professor in the Department of Counseling.

The deadline for the early registration for this workshop is Friday, October 23, 2009. More information about this and other future workshops can be found at the CCTS website or by contacting the center at 724-357-3807.
