Begg, Benhart, and Hoch Present to Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Institute of Geography

IUP Geography and Regional Planning faculty members Bob Begg, John Benhart, and Richard Hoch recently traveled to Bulgaria to participate in a research project funded by the European Union. Professors Hoch and Benhart made presentations to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Institute of Geography, focusing on geospatial techniques for identifying and quantifying physical and anthropogenic risks to cultural resources in Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is unique is the respect that the country contains cultural resources that were a product of Alexander the Great’s Balkan Empire, as well as the Roman and Ottoman Empires.

Begg, Benhart, and Hoch also began a collaboration with Bulgarian colleagues on a new set of grant proposals to research land use change along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, as well as the analysis of demographic changes and geospatial specification of ecosystem services impacts within watersheds in the Balkan Mountains.
