IUP Center to Offer Workshop on Autism

Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Counselor Training and Services will present a workshop May 8 on autism.
The one-day event, Autism: From Research to Clinical Practice, will be offered at IUP’s Eberly Auditorium by Dr. Antonio Hardan.

Hardan is an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Stanford University Medical Center and is the director of the Autism and Developmental Disorders Clinic. His work was the recent feature on the cover page of Clinical Psychiatry News, and he has extensive clinical and research experience in the field of developmental disabilities including autism.

Hardan has completed research investigations in several areas, including the neurobiology of autism and pharmacological treatments. His work has been published in journals, including the American Journal of Psychiatry and the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

He completed his doctoral training at Saint Joseph University School of Medicine and Dentistry in Lebanon and internships in Lebanon, France, and Washington, D.C. His general psychiatric residency was completed at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He concluded his child and adolescent psychiatry training at the University Health Center of Pittsburgh, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.

The workshop will cover assessment and diagnosis; psychology and neurobiology; cognitive, behavioral, and psychosocial interventions; and pharmacological and alternative treatments.

The IUP Center for Counselor Training and Services offers professional workshops and training for community and school counselors and other mental health professionals throughout the region. The center is directed by Dr. John McCarthy, professor in the IUP Department of Counseling.
