An IUP doctoral student has been selected to receive a scholarship from the Pennsylvania Black Conference on Higher Education (PBCOHE).

Krista Shauntae Lewis, an English Literature and Criticism major, will be awarded the John S. Shropshire Graduate Scholarship of $1,000.

Last December, the Office of Social Equity and Civic Engagement forwarded five scholarship applications to the PBCOHE for consideration by the scholarship committee. The organization awarded nine $1,000 scholarships to Commonwealth students. Requirements included scholarship (3.0 grade-point average or higher), extracurricular activity participation, leadership qualities, and interpersonal qualities. Students were required to compose an essay explaining why they should receive the scholarship award.

Awards will be presented at the thirty-ninth annual conference of the PBCOHE at the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey Hotel on March 6, 2009.
