Spring Break 2009 Residential Facility Closing Notice

All university residential facilities, with the exception of Scranton, Lawrence, and McCarthy halls and University Towers, will be closed and locked with I-Card access systems deactivated from 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 28, until noon on Sunday, March 8. Students are not permitted in the residence halls during the break period.

Note: Lawrence, Scranton, McCarthy, and University Towers will be available only for students who have applied for and who meet specific criteria for break housing.

Residence Hall Closing

All resident students must vacate their rooms no later than 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 28. All residence halls will be closed and I-Card systems deactivated during the break. Students are asked to leave for break as early as possible following their last class.

The following procedures must be completed by all residents before leaving. Rooms will be checked by the residence hall staff to ensure that these steps have been completed. The university assumes no responsibility for any consequences of failure to carry out these procedures.

  • Remove all perishable food.
  • Completely empty all trash cans.
  • Leave heat valves open.
  • Close drapes/pull window shades halfway.
  • Close and securely latch windows, turn lights out, and lock door.
  • Shut off all electrical appliances/items and check that no outlets are overloaded.
  • Note: As an added precaution, it is recommended that all electrical appliances/items be disconnected from the wall outlets during the break period.

Food service is not available during the vacation.

Important Information

  • The university cannot be responsible for theft or damage to any items left in student rooms during the break period. Students are urged to make special provisions for the security of valuable items. As a reminder, it is advisable for all residents to have personal property insurance.
  • Residents are advised that any necessary maintenance and/or custodial services will continue to be performed during the break period.
  • All residential buildings will reopen at noon on Sunday, March 8. I-Card access systems will be reactivated at that time.
  • The deadline to apply for break housing is Friday, February 13, 2009. For information regarding break housing, please contact the Office of Housing and Residence Life at 724-357-2696.
