Lingle-Martin to Present Colloquium on Chinese Counting Rods

Mathematics instructor Jason Lingle-Martin will present a colloquium on Chinese counting rods on Tuesday, November 11, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Stright Hall, room 302.  Lingle-Martin will describe how counting rods were used to multiply, divide, and extract square roots. He will also present the argument given by Lam Lay Yong and Ang Tian Se that identifies the rod numeral system as the origin of the Hindu-Arabic numerals.
