Mini-Grants Awarded for Living-Learning Activities

The Office of Housing and Residence Life at IUP has announced that the following mini-grants have been awarded for Spring 2008:

Description of Initiative  
Dr. DeAnna Laverick Cross-curricular peer mentoring, reflection and journaling for students on Education floors lasting approximately six weeks
Dr. Kim Weiner Funding for equipment (mats, meditation bell, blankets, cushions, etc.) for meditation sittings each day at prescribed times in suites buildings
Dr. Carolyn Princes Start-up money for new living-learning initiatives to bring noted ethnic guest speakers of the African American Cultural Center to suites buildings
Michele Norwood Funding to support activities related to Crimson Connection/Common Hour
Dr. Yong S. Colen Guest speakers, field trips, conference attendance to better prepare Education majors (in Shafer) on mathematical concepts
Dr. Carmy Carranza Peer educators (SI Leaders) will provide Supplemental Instruction for College of Health and Human Services students whose performance in Chemistry and Biology courses is below academic standards. The Accelerated Learning Groups (ALG) sessions will take place in residence hall facilities.

Seed monies to support peer mentor program for Nursing students in the Wellness suites

Promotional materials to support new Business living-learning community in the suites buildings. Funding for conference attendance to train faculty on developing a Business living-learning community geared toward providing a first-year experience that provides collaborative learning among students, faculty, and staff. Also, for Spring 2008 and Fall 2008, funding for two programs designed for existing Business floors.

Freshman Cardiovascular Risk Assessment and Personal Awareness Initiative to take place in living-learning facilities
Dr. Stephanie Taylor-Davis Celebration of cross-cultural diversity and the promotion of cross-cultural understanding through food. Programming would establish annual showcase to highlight the heritage of students to share their food history and practices with other students.
