Job Description

The IUP Web Team seeks a student employee to assist us in our renovation of all our department websites as part of the SWAP project.

This project is a multi-year effort to bring top-quality content to our department websites to improve student recruitment. Content for each website comes from a variety of sources (outside consultants, the web team, university photographer, graduate school). This content needs to be assembled on our staging server as it comes in, then handed off to our editorial team for final editing.

This student will be doing the initial assembly of content on the website, as well as a variety of updates and maintenance tasks across the site. Some technical knowledge is helpful, but we will train the student on our systems. Writing and editing abilities are key, as we don’t have the resources to train students in these skills.

This student may also be involved in web analytics, writing for the web, image processing, accessibility upgrades, and other areas.

Typical Duties

  1. Assembling incoming content on our staging server, including text, photography, and audio.
  2. Conducting content inventories and assessments of existing websites.
  3. Processing images to be ready for the web.
  4. Evaluating and writing content for accessibility (alternate text for images and transcripts for video).
  5. Writing or rewriting web content.
  6. Retrieving (and sometimes analyzing) web analytics for our customers.

Desired Experience

  • 1-2 years of journalistic writing. We’d like to know that you can work on deadlines and produce copy that doesn’t require extensive editing on our part.
  • Ability to write clear, concise, grammatically correct prose that conforms to our style guide. (We use the Chicago Manual of Style, with some variations of our own.)
  • Some experience with Photoshop and web graphics creation
  • Comfort with learning new technologies on a regular basis.

To apply, please send the following to

  1. Resume
  2. Two writing samples (online or print)
