Writing Across the Curriculum Workshops for Instructors: Fall 2014

The Writing Across the Curriculum initiative at IUP will offer two workshops this fall designed to support faculty in teaching writing to their students in any course at the university.

Introduction to Writing-to-Learn

Tuesday, September 9, 2:00–2:50 p.m. or Wednesday, September 10, 1:25–2:15 p.m., in the IUP Writing Center (218 Eicher Hall)

If you want to give your students more practice with writing, but don’t want to take up too much class time to do it, then come to this workshop. We’ll discuss:

  • The theory and pedagogy of writing-to-learn
  • How to help your students process course content through quick writing tasks
  • Ideas for getting students to want to write in your course
  • Ways to engage students in your lectures and course content through writing

Strategies for Efficiently Grading Student Writing

Wednesday, October 8, 10:10–11:00 a.m. or Thursday, October 9, 2:00–2:50 p.m., in the IUP Writing Center (218 Eicher Hall)

If you want to assign more writing but aren’t sure how you’ll have time to grade it, then this workshop is for you. We’ll talk about:

  • Ungraded writing
  • Random grading
  • Rubrics and other types of feedback
  • Efficient methods of response
