Wachob Presents on Public School Teachers’ Beliefs and Practices

David Wachob, assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Health, and Sport Science, presented his research entitled “Teacher Beliefs and Practices about Learning: Discrepancies in the Field” at the 21st International Conference on Learning, held in New York City from July 14–17, 2014.

The paper and presentation reported on his research that measured K-12 teachers’ beliefs about the learning process, and the extent that those beliefs drove instructional decisions in the classroom. The results found strong correlations between teachers’ beliefs about the learning process and their instructional strategies. Further analysis revealed significant differences in beliefs based on gender and instructional grade level of the teachers.

The International Conference on Learning focuses on genre approaches to literacy and an interest to explore new educational possibilities. The conference also extends its interest into learning more generally, and particularly, the question of “new learning” or the necessary transformations underway in teaching and learning in contemporary social, cultural, and technological conditions. Participants include academics, teachers, administrators, policy makers, and other education practitioners from around the globe.
