Each year, the Outstanding Student Section Award honors a student section that demonstrates excellence in the areas of professional development, community involvement, involvement in ASSE, and section generated research. IUP’s section impressed the Outstanding Student Section Award Selection Committee with their dedication to safety in their community and the advancement of the safety, health, and environment profession through original and innovative research. Some of their research included: 1) “The Challenges in Academia: A Look at Some of the Most Common and Costly Safety Violations;” 2) “The Effect of Vibration from Tattoo Machines;” and 3) “Back Belts: Do they Work? A Survey Regarding Back Belts for Fitness vs. Occupational Research.”

The IUP student section also hosted a regional safety conference with Slippery Rock University in October 2013 and sold out in their first year! IUP and SRU will host the second annual conference this October at IUP’s Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex. Proceeds from the conference are being used to establish an endowment fund for IUP and SRU students. IUP students also got busy in the community, where some of their volunteer work included working at the local food bank, evaluating machine guarding issues at a local high school, and providing safety consulting on campus, related to ventilation control in cooking operations.

IUP student section officers include Tracey Cekada, faculty advisor; Jon Blair, president; Matt Merschbach, vice president; Caroline Billon, secretary; Elliott Laratonda, treasurer; and Brad August, social chair.

The student section received a plaque and a check in the amount of $6,000 for their efforts!
