Mueller and Graduate Students Speak at Transatlantic Conference

John Mueller, professor in the Department of Student Affairs in Higher Education, and three graduate students spoke at the third Transatlantic Dialogue Conference, which took place June 4–6, 2014, in Luxembourg. The theme of the conference, “Connecting through Culture: A Vision for Global Citizenship,” was intended to bring together higher education professionals and graduate students from Europe and the U.S. to discuss the significance of culture in a liberal arts education curriculum.

Mueller presented his research and scholarship in a session titled “Multiculturalism in U.S. Higher Education.” SAHE graduate students Jackie Fisher (‘15) and Meghan Olbrys (‘15) presented “Fostering Learning through the Core Curriculum.” SAHE alumna Danielle Brush (‘14) participated on a graduate student and new professionals panel that examined pedagogy and practice related to the conference theme.

The conference was the culminating activity of a two-week study tour. Coordinated by Miami University (Ohio) and Bowling Green State University (Ohio), the study tour was designed to examine the delivery of higher education in the European Union, including admissions, curriculum, and student services.

The tour included institutional visits to the American University in Paris, the University of Amsterdam, the University of Antwerp, and the Miami University John E. Dolibois Center in Luxembourg. In addition, tour participants met with officials from Crous de Paris and the European Commission.

The trip was rounded out by visits to some of the most significant economic, cultural, and historic landmarks in France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Germany.
