The IUP Safety Sciences Department congratulates Caroline Billon, Jake Reynolds, and Elliot Laratonda as the 2014 winners of the Alcoa Campus Partnership Accident Investigation Competition.

2014 Alcoa Competition Winners

All three students (back row of photo) recently completed their junior year in the Safety, Health, and Environmental Applied Sciences program at IUP. In the front row are Alcoa representatives who participated in and judged this year’s competition: Jamie Mackay, director of Global Environmental Compliance and Sustainability; Joe Progar, AWTP Environmental Health and Safety director and Campus Team leader; and Jeff Shockey, Alcoa’s Corporate Safety director. Progar and Shockey are graduates of IUP’s Safety Sciences program. Jan Wachter from the Safety Sciences Department coordinated and also judged this event.

Three undergraduate student teams from the IUP Safety Sciences Department were provided with an extensive accident scenario to review. This year’s accident scenario involved a worker inappropriately accessing a confined space, causing him to come into contact with high temperature ash and dust, leading to fatal inhalation burns. This scenario was based in part on actual industrial fatalities that have occurred.

In order to gather information and to identify the root causes of the accident, these teams then conducted mock accident investigations with representatives from Alcoa and IUP, who acted out various roles associated with the scenario. The teams then gave a presentation to the Alcoa and IUP panel of judges on their conclusions as to what caused the accident. These activities were conducted from March through May of 2014.

Other IUP student teams that participated in the event were: Jenna Havyer, Neil Trevasani, and Melissa Rubritz; and Matthew Kovach, Tim Mangis, and Taylor Napolillo.

All students who participated in this competition received $500 each. The winners received an additional $500 each. Congratulations to everyone on investigations well done!
