Professor and Students Perform at International Tuba Euphonium Conference

Zach Collins and students of the IUP Tuba and Euphonium Studio traveled to Bloomington, Ind., to present invited performances at the 2014 International Tuba Euphonium Conference (ITEC).

His recital featured “Concerto No. 2” for tuba by IUP alumnus Anthony O’Toole, as well as works by Russian composers Alexey Lebedev and Valerey Strukov. Collins was joined by James McClarty, trumpeter with “The President's Own” Marine Band, for Strukov’s “Scherzo” for piccolo trumpet, tuba, and piano.

The IUP Tubaphonium Ensemble, comprised of music majors, minors, and non-majors, performed a concert on Friday, May 23. The ensemble performed “Tubaphonium Overture” by Zach Collins and “Suite for Four Bass Instruments” by Max Lyon. The Tubaphonium Ensemble shared the stage with tuba-euphonium ensembles from Marshall University and the Hartt and Eastman Schools of Music. The four schools combined to perform the world premiere of Barbara York’s “Dark Chocolate Suite,” a new work commissioned by the four schools on the program.

While at the conference, Collins also presented the Roger Bobo Awards for Excellence in Recording. The Roger Bobo Awards are given to the best recordings produced in the last two years that feature the tuba and/or euphonium. Collins has served as director of the Roger Bobo Awards since 2012.

The International Tuba Euphonium Conference is the premier gathering of performers, educators, and researchers of the tuba and euphonium. ITEC is held every two years.
