Student Research Forums Provide Learning-in-Action

Undergraduate Scholars Forum 2014

IUP’s Research Appreciation Week was a great success!

The Undergraduate Scholars Forum had 284 students participate, a 55 percent increase from the previous year and a new record for IUP. Students presented their scholarly works in a variety of formats, including oral presentations (85), research and scholarly posters (152), business cases (27), musical performances (6), theater/dance performances (1), and juried art exhibits (13). These scholarly works were sponsored and evaluated by over 160 faculty sponsors and judges.

The Graduate Scholars Forum had 112 students participate. These students shared their work in the form of posters (87), oral presentations (16), musical performances (1), and juried art exhibits (8). Faculty involvement in the Graduate Scholars Forum continues to be strong, with 67 faculty sponsors and judges.

This is hands-on, “learning in action,” with active mentoring and support from faculty. These activities help students grow and develop in their majors by allowing them to do independent research and then present their works in a public venue. Students often tell us that they weren’t sure that they could do research and present it, and now they say, “I can do it!”

Many of these works feature innovation and new knowledge that contribute to workforce development and new industries in Pennsylvania. IUP is an engine of positive change in Pennsylvania because of our students.
