LeBlond Publishes More Moodle Question Types for Chemistry

Carl LeBlond of the Chemistry Department had four additional question types approved and published on Moodle.org.  In total, LeBlond has developed eight question types to date, which are available for free download as a set (EasyOChem Question Types Set) on Moodle.org.

These question types provide unprecedented assessment and evaluation of concepts in organic chemistry. The EasyOChem Question Types can also be test driven on Scimersion. Scimersion is a website dedicated to developing and demonstrating software for teaching science with Moodle. Instructors can build highly interactive websites and courses for teaching science (math, computer science, chemistry, and physics). Scimersion is free for high school science instructors and is administered and maintained by LeBlond.

Drag and Drop Newman Projections

Overview

Drag and drop question that tests student’s knowledge of drawing and interpreting Newman Projections. Ask question such as:

  • Draw (S)-butan-2-ol looking up its C2-C3 bond?
  • Draw the most stable conformation of 2-methylbutane?

Features

  • Interactive: students drag and drop to construct Newman projections.
  • Staggered and eclipsed conformations.
  • Settings for conformation and perspective.

Drag and Drop  Fischer Projections

Overview

Drag and drop question type that assesses students knowledge of constructing and interpreting Fischer Projections. Ask question such as:

  • Construct L-alanine on the template below?
  • Convert the following structure into a Fischer projection?

Features

  • Interactive: students drag and drop to construct Fischer projections.
  • Choose between one to four stereocenters.
  • Option to allow rotation.

Electron Pushing/Curved Arrow

Overview

Curved Arrow/Electron Pushing question can be used to test and strengthen student’s knowledge of reaction mechanism, resonance, and curved arrow notation. The instructor builds a reaction scheme/mechanism with all electron pushing arrows, and the student must provide the correct arrows on the reaction during assessment. Note: This plugin requires MArvin Applets from Chemaxon.

You can ask questions such as:

  • Please add curved arrows showing the flow of electrons for the following reaction?
  • Please add curved arrows showing how the following resonance structure could be obtained?

Features

  • Interactive: students draw curved arrows representing flow of electrons.
  • Students can view step-by-step arrow placement.
  • Multistep reactions OK!
  • Radical or polar reactions possible.
  • Teacher can hide or show products for varying difficulty.
  • Teacher can require strict arrow addition order.

Name to Structure

Overview

With this question type, instructors can query students to reproduce a single molecule, set of molecules, or reactions. This question type is similar to  Structure match with editorand the Pattern match with JME editor, but offers some distinct advantages (see features below). This plugin requires Marvin Applets from Chemaxon.

  • Please draw the structure of water showing all lone pairs?
  • Draw acetic acid and its dissociation in water?
  • Draw all stereoisomers for the following molecule?
  • Draw (R)-3-methyl-pentan-2-ol?

Features

  • Utilizes Chemaxons extended smiles (cxsmiles) format with the unique option.
    • Supports reactions
    • E/Z and R/S stereochemistry
    • Unique smiles output
    • Lone pair and radical electrons and charges allowed.
  • Instructor builds structure in editor and easily inserts into answer fields
