Eberly College of Business Raises Money for Former Eberly Student

Eberly College of Business Student Advisory Council and Bushmire FundraiserThe Eberly College of Business Student Advisory Council (COBSAC) raised $1,200 for Brandon Bushmire, a former Eberly student, who was injured when struck by a car in September 2012.

Bushmire, a general management major, was found unresponsive in the street with a severe head injury after he was hit by a drunk driver while crossing School Street. Due to the accident, Brandon suffered from major brain injuries and has undergone numerous surgeries.

Inspired by an article published in the Penn about Brandon’s recovery a year after the accident, COBSAC wanted to help alleviate some of the financial costs that Bushmire and his family were facing, according to COBSAC President Nate Rosenberg.

Bushmire’s medical bills were extensive at the time the Penn article was written and have only continued to grow, according to Brandon’s father, Alan.

COBSAC, which is comprised of the officers from all 15 business organizations in Eberly, decided at the beginning of the semester to organize a collegewide fundraiser to support the cause.

The officers of COBSAC set a goal of $1,000 for the college to collect by the end of the semester.

Flyers were posted throughout the college promoting the fundraiser, and e-mails were sent to business students reminding them of COBSAC’s goal and the progress being made.

Motivation for the fundraiser stemmed from a freestanding sign in the lobby of the college that was tracking the amount of money that had already been raised. Donations were collected in the Academic Services office in Eberly.

On the morning of April 4, COBSAC officially announced that the $1,000 goal had been reached due to generous contributions of Eberly students, faculty, administration, and student-based organizations, as well as a donation from student Mohammed Alarjani and his family, whose mother suffered a similar experience to Bushmire.

However, COBSAC continued to fundraise and exceeded their goal by collecting donations in the Eberly Café during lunch hours and hosting a yard sale in Eberly’s lobby.

“I’m more than happy about our results to not only meet our fundraising goal, but surpass it by 20 percent,” Rosenberg said. “We came together as a team for an extremely notable cause, and the outcome is a wonderful testament to the character of IUP’s students.”

COBSAC plans to present the Bushmire family with the donation by the end of the semester.
