IUP Community Cares, May 2–May 10

IUP Community Cares is an end-of-the-academic year donation drive whose purpose is to help students and other members of the IUP community recycle/reuse unwanted items.

Item drop-off locations will be set up in the lobbies of each of the residence halls (or other designated area) beginning the afternoon of May 2, 2014. Additionally, there will be two large trucks from Goodwill of the Conemaugh Valley, the regional chapter serving Indiana and surrounding counties. These trucks will be located in front of Wallwork and Stephenson halls.

What can I donate?

Just about anything can be donated! In the large blue bins located within each residence hall, you can place any clothing or household items (including towels, bedding, hangers, coffee makers, electronic equipment, end tables, etc.) You can even donate broken electronic equipment! Additionally, there will be several boxes for nonperishable food items located near the bins. All areas will be clearly marked within your community.

Is there anything I can NOT donate?

We ask that you not donate partially consumed packages of food or broken wooden furniture. Thank you!

Where will my donated items go?

Non-Perishable Food

Any non-perishable food items that are donated will be provided to various food banks within Indiana County, directly serving our community. These agencies include: Indiana County Community Action Program (ICCAP), Chevy Chase Community Center, St Thomas Moore University Parish, Zion Lutheran Church

Clothing and Household Items

Goodwill Industries of the Conemaugh Valley (GICV), Inc. provides job training, employment support, and rehabilitation services to individuals with disadvantages and disabilities, dislocated workers, youth, and other job seekers. The greatest financial support for these in-demand services comes from the role for which the Goodwill name is best known—the sale of donated goods. GICV directs revenue generated from the sale of donated items into community services and programs in Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Huntingdon, Indiana, Somerset, and portions of Westmoreland counties. GICV is a community-based member organization of Goodwill Industries International, a 179-member network in the U.S., Canada, and 13 other countries.

I do not live in a residence hall. Can I still donate items?

Yes! The lobbies of our suite-style residence halls are open from 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. May 2–9. Please feel free to donate in any of our locations.

For more information, please contact the Office of Housing, Residential Living, and Dining (OHRLD): 724-357-2696.
