Laura Jo Rieske, Lexie Elliott, and Shannon O’Reilly
(pictured), graduate students in the Department of Student Affairs
in Higher Education, were among 12 IUP graduates honored at the fourth annual Lavender Graduation Ceremony on April 24, 2014, at the Kovalchick Complex.
Lavender Graduation, sponsored by IUP’s LGBT Commission and
the President’s Commission on the Status of Women, celebrates the contributions
of students who identify with or ally with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or
transgender community at IUP. The
program started at the University of Michigan in 1995 and is conducted at
hundreds of colleges and universities nationwide. IUP started Lavender Graduation in 2011.
Candace Gingrich (’89), of the Human Rights Campaign, was
the keynote speaker at this year’s program. President Michael Driscoll was present to congratulate the students and
present them with a certificate of recognition. Each student was also presented with a lavender cord which can be worn
at the university’s Commencement ceremonies on May 10.
