Seminar: High Altitude Water Cherenkov Obervatory

Miguel Mostafa from Penn State University will discuss the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory on April 18, 2014.

In this colloquium, the speaker will present the physics motivation, potential for discoveries, current status of the deployment, and the first results of the HAWC Observatory.

The High Altitude Water Cherenkov experiment is a large field of view, continuously operated TeV gamma ray observatory under construction at 14,000 ft in Mexico. This observatory will have an order of magnitude better sensitivity, angular resolution, and background rejection than its predecessor, and will be the only ground-based instrument capable of detecting prompt  emission from gamma ray bursts above 100 GeV.

All seminars convene on Fridays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Weyandt Hall, Room 331. Light refreshments are provided. For more information, please contact A.J. Haija, the Physics Department seminar coordinator.
