Rieg to Work With IUP and Indiana School District Partnership

Sue RiegSue Rieg, chair of the Professional Studies in Education Department at IUP, has been awarded a $10,000 Innovation Grant from the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s Faculty Professional Development Council for her proposal, “Building the BRIDGE: Building University and School District Relationships for Innovation, Development and Growth in Education.”

Rieg was one of nine applicants that received a part of the $75,000 available, and was selected based on her proposal. She will be working with East Pike Elementary School in the Indiana Area School District (IASD) during the first year of implementation of a Professional Development School (PDS) partnership. Rieg will continue her partnership with East Pike Elementary School during the 2014–2015 academic year by working with teacher candidates and their cooperating teachers to use pre-assessment data to identify three children with academic needs, design interventions for academic support, and analyze post-assessment data.

Rieg further explained that this grant will build upon a grant from the National Education Association that she and the East Pike teachers were awarded just this year. Based on her research, a Professional Learning Community study group (two IUP faculty members and five East Pike teachers) were convened to design the IUP/IASD PDS partnership.
