LeBlond Publishes New Moodle Question Types for Chemistry

Carl LeBlond of the Department of Chemistry has published four new question types for teaching and assessing students in chemistry. These question types were designed for the open source LMS Moodle and are available for download on the Moodle website.

Drag and Drop Organic Chemistry Nomenclature Question Type

Learning organic chemistry nomenclature is not extremely difficult, and most students acquire the basics quickly. Unfortunately, a good percentage of students mangle the format, punctuation, and/or spelling, losing valuable points on exams and quizzes. With this in mind, a new question type was designed to reinforce IUPAC nomenclature with an emphasis on formatting and punctuation. Students must construct names by dragging and dropping parent chains, prefixes, suffixes, and punctuation symbols to form the correct name.

2D/3D Structure Display Short Answer Question Type

The 2D/3D Structure Display short answer question type is a short answer question with MarvinSketch for building question content and MarvinView for displaying question content.

Features:

  • Interactive: students can rotate molecules in 3D.
  • Different display options include line bond, normal (Lewis structure like), and 3D Ball and Stick.
  • Structures can be optimized in 2D and 3D before display.

Easily design questions such as:

  • Are the two chlorine groups in the following structure cis or trans?
  • What is the name of the following reaction?
  • Does this structure have R or S absolute stereochemistry?

Select Atoms or Molecules Question Type

This question type allows instructors to design questions in which students select various atoms, molecules, bonds, or other objects. The instructor builds molecules or reactions with the MarvinSketch editor and selects certain objects as the answer. The student is then presented with the molecules or reactions and must select according to question text.

Easily design questions such as:

  • Select all chiral centers in the following molecule?
  • Select all sp3 hybrid atoms in the following structure?
  • Choose the nucleophile in the following reaction?
  • Select the reaction arrow which violates the rules of electron pushing?

Lewis Structure Question Type

The Lewis structure question type allows instructors to draws valid Lewis structures with all lone pairs and charges for a molecule. The student is presented with the structure stripped of lone pairs or formal charge, and they must add correct number of lone pairs/radicals or charges to any atoms.

Instructors can ask questions such as:

  • Add the formal charges to any atoms requiring it in the following structure?
  • Show all lone pair or radical electrons required to satisfy the charge on any atoms in the following molecule?
