Sigma Tau Delta Hosts “Publish Your Creative Writing” Workshop

On March 27, 2014, Sigma Tau Delta hosted the “Publish Your Creative Writing” workshop. The panel consisted of Daniel Weinstein, John Branscum, and graduate student Rachael Warmington. Students who attended the workshop asked questions about publishing creative and academic work both in print and online.

2014 Publication Panel
Warmington, Weinstein, and Branscum, English Department, sat on the "Publish Your Creative Writing" workshop panel.

Some of the advice included the following:

  • Pay attention to the market you’re aiming for. Look at the guidelines and interests of publishing houses, and follow submission guidelines closely.
  • Pay attention to and research which journals you submit to (i.e., scholarly or non-scholarly). Publications attract attention and help you kickstart new ideas.
  • Have a positive presence on the Web (review books, join projects, etc.).
  • Read the book Formatting and Submitting Your Manuscript for other good tips about publishing.

This was the second workshop in Sigma Tau Delta’s spring semester workshop series. The previous workshop helped students figure out what to do with their BA in English, and the final workshop, which will be held on April 24 at 7:00 p.m. in Stabley Library, Room 210, will advise students about how to get into graduate school.
