Jiang and Machado Present on Educational Use of Twitter at International Conference

Ying Jiang, doctoral candidate of Curriculum and Instruction, presented a paper co-authored with Crystal Machado, associate professor, Professional Studies in Education, at the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education Conference in Jacksonville, Florida, in March 2014. Their presentation was titled “Critical Thinking and Reflective Practice: Using Twitter to Heighten Student Engagement Within and Beyond the Classroom.”

Twitter, a microblogging, social media tool which has become part of the mainstream conversation, is having an impact on politics, media, business, and education. Jiang described the influence that Twitter is having across disciplines in general, and the field of education in particular. With the help of vignettes she described how Machado is using Twitter to engage pre-service and in-service education professionals across three different programs, in higher level thinking and reflective practice, both in the field as well as in the classroom. Participants were invited to explore the pedagogical possibilities of using Twitter in both K-12 and higher education classrooms.
