Rahkonen Presents on Finnish American Composer Martti Nisonen

Carl Rahkonen, music librarian, presented a paper entitled “Finnish American Composer Martti Nisonen and World War II” at the national meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study, part of the Yale Conference on Baltic and Scandinavian Studies at Yale University on March 13, 2014.

Nisonen was involved in the Finnish war effort during World War II, by gathering and sending aid and recruiting soldiers from among Finnish-Americans. His thoughts and feelings about the War became focused in his last large composition, the Symphony in F (1945), a programmatic work telling the story of how Finland survived the War and its hopes and fears for the future.
