CornoCopius (Lots of Horn) Festival 2014

IUP Horn professor Jack Scandrett will present the annual CornoCopius Festival on March 29–31, featuring the IUP Horn studio and alumni and faculty performances in 121 Cogswell Hall.

HornsThe IUP Horn studio, under the direction of Scandrett, will present its annual series of performances called CornoCopius, loosely translated to mean “Lots of Horn.” This year’s event will begin with three student recitals on Saturday, March 29. At 1:00 p.m., performance major Michael Heuft will present works by Hindemith, Gliere, and Mozart. At 2:30, Lexie Sobolewski, horn, will team with clarinetist Dana Steinert; and, at 4:00 p.m., senior performance major Ryan Howell will perform works by Richard Strauss and Sigurd Berge.

Horn EnsembleOn Sunday, March 30, the IUP Horn Ensemble—also known as the Horn Band—will be joined by two dozen IUP alumni for a large horn ensemble program. Alumni from each of the three-plus decades that Scandrett has been at IUP, will get together at noon to rehearse and present a program to the public at 4:00 p.m. The program will feature works for six, eight, twelve, and eighteen horns.

Several alumni will be featured as soloists. College of Fine Arts Assistant Dean David Ferguson will narrate the story of the Sleeping Bear in a work for 12 horns by Eric Ewazen.

The 2014 festival will conclude on Monday night at 8:00 p.m. when Scandrett will present his farewell recital. Scandrett, who is retiring at the end of this semester after 34 years at IUP, will be joined by his wife, Lucy, who teaches harp at IUP, along with colleagues Henry Wong Doe, piano; Jacob Ertl, piano; and Michael Kingan, percussion. The program will feature the premiere of a work written especially for the program by IUP composer Jack Stamp as well as works by Beethoven, Andres, and Beckel.

All events will be held in the DiCicco Room, 121 Cogswell Hall.
