Anthropology Faculty and Student Blog about Digital Humanities

Marion Smeltzer and Beverly Chiarulli (retired) recently published a Society for Historical Archaeology blog on their work with virtual worlds and three-dimensional recording.

The blog, available through the Society for Historical Archaeology website, summarizes Marion and Bev’s long-standing work on reconstructing archaeological sites in digital environments so that they can be accessed by a wide range of publics. The blog also details recent work to integrate three-dimensional scans of structures into these virtual worlds. The 3-D scans are made possible by a laser scanner that was acquired by a joint Anthropology/History National Science Foundation grant. Ultimately, the goal is to bring the 3-D scans to children and people unable to access the sites through virtual reconstructions.

This blog was part of a week-long series on Public Archaeology.
