ArtsPath Offers Professional Development on the Arts and Autism

Autism Workshop Children's GraphicOn Saturday, March 8, 2014, ArtsPath will host professional artists Alison Zapata and Rebecca Covert as they present a professional development session primarily for teachers and IUP students interested in arts integration strategies to engage students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in everyday classroom settings. The session takes place from 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. in Room 126, Cogswell Hall.

The professional development session is the direct result of students who experienced an artist residency in a Creative Experiences course during Fall 2013, expressing an interest in expanding their newly learned arts integration knowledge. More specifically, they wanted a more in-depth understanding of strategies integrating the arts into teaching students with ASD in the everyday classrooms they anticipate teaching in upon graduation.

The session is geared to the students who were involved in this previous residency, and is also open to any future teacher who anticipates working with students who have ASD, current teachers, or teaching artists. All will benefit from this session and are invited to register.

The cost is $10, and limited slots are available. Interested individuals are encouraged to register as soon as possible. Download the workshop information and registration form here. For current teachers, Act 48 credit will be available.

For additional information, please contact Jeff Wacker at jwacker@iup.edu or at 724-357-2787.

The entire session is supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
