Psychology Alumna to Present Colloquium on Developmental and Clinical Implications of Effect Size Reporting in Research

Laura Mills-Smith will present “Developmental and Clinical Implications of Problems in Effect Size Reporting” on Wednesday, March 12, from 3:30–4:30 p.m. in Uhler Hall, Room 114.

The guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA) require that effect size estimates (ESE) be reported along with statistical results to provide a better indication of the magnitude of the association between factors and dependent measures. Hence, psychological science journals now require authors to provide ES estimates.

This presentation will report on a research project that examined recent infant-specific research from select journals to examine the accuracy and interpretative value of ESEs. Demographics, sample size, design, and statistical data were coded from published articles presenting experiments on infants using behavioral methods. Descriptive and distribution statistics were calculated for the following variables: (1) commonly used statistical tests, (2) effect size parameters, and (3) effect size interpretations. The results will be described, and the implications of the results in terms of this specific literature, as well as other areas of psychology (e.g., clinical implications) will also be discussed.

Laura Mills-Smith, MS, is a doctoral candidate in Developmental Psychology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She is also a graduate (summa cum laude) of IUP’s BA Psychology program (2010) in addition to holding bachelor's degrees in English and Anthropology from IUP (2009). Her research interests span across issues of language acquisition and social attention.
