Dieter CasselDieter Cassel, associate director of the University of Duisburg-Essen’s international programs, will be at the Eberly College of Business on February 10 to promote the Business and Economics Summer Term (BEST) program for summer 2014.

Eberly has been in a partnership with the University of Duisburg-Essen, located near Dusseldorf, Germany, for about 20 years. This is one of Eberly’s oldest partnerships.

In the BEST program, students travel to the University of Duisburg-Essen for the summer and take a variety of courses in an international setting in business, economics, and German language, with special emphasis on the European economic environment.

The program also includes company visits and field trips within the industrial and cultural vicinity to the university.

Company visits to the facilities of major business players, such as Aldi, König Brewery, and Thyssen Krupp Steel Works, are offered in addition to a visit to the Dusseldorf branch of the German Federal Bank.

Another highlight of the BEST program is an excursion to Berlin, the capital of Germany. Students go on several guided tours to the political, commercial, and cultural highlights of the city.

The program only takes 24 students total, and Eberly typically sends two or three students to the program annually.

“Many of our students have benefited from this nice international exchange where all classes are taught in English,” Dean’s Associate Prashanth Bharadwaj said.

The partnership has now expanded to include Peoples Education Society (PES) Institutions in India, and hundreds of students travel annually among Duisburg-Essen, IUP, and PES Institutions.

Faculty as well as students have participated in the exchange, staying for a semester on sabbatical to do research.

Even the students from PES take advantage of the program.

“Last year, I took 50 students from India to Germany,” Bharadwaj said.

In addition to teaching at Duisburg-Essen and running its BEST program, Cassel was chairman of the Committee on Health Economics at the Society for Economic and Social Studies and is chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of APOLLON Health Economics in Bremen.
