Take Measures to Protect IUP Facilities During Extreme Cold

The weather forecast for our region is calling for dangerously cold temperatures this evening and through mid day tomorrow with very cold temperatures continuing throughout the remainder of the week.

These low temperatures not only stress the human element, but also the mechanical systems we rely on to protect the physical assets of the university—our buildings and equipment. In unheated spaces or spaces subject to icy wind blasts, pipes can freeze quickly.

Everyone (employees and students) can help by taking a few simple steps:

  • Please double check to ensure windows are closed in your area before leaving for the night.
  • If you have control of the HVAC equipment in your office or classroom, please ensure that equipment is turned on to the "heat" setting and running.
  • When you enter or leave a building, please check to make sure the door has completely closed before continuing.
  • For our students who live in the residence halls, please ensure your windows too are closed before leaving your room.

Please report any very cold or unusually cold areas you may come across to the Facilities Operations Group at 724-357-2710, or to Campus Police at 724-357-2141.
