Spring Semester 2014: Welcome Back, Web Maintainers

Welcome back, web maintainers! We hope you all enjoyed the break. As you start another busy semester, there are some things that you might find helpful to know. Here’s a quick update on what happened last semester and what’s coming up.

Check Your Current Web Maintainer List

Please take a moment to look at the list of Web Maintainers for your office. If there’s anyone who needs to be removed or added, please fill out on ihelp ticket and let us know.

(If you aren’t or are no longer a web maintainer, let us know that, too.)

New Sites Launched/Updated

Here’s a partial list of the websites we created, refreshed, or relaunched last fall:

New Features and Fixes

It was a busy fall for the Web Team. We handled 768 ihelp tickets and e-mail requests and approved 10,495 pieces of content (that’s about 125 each weekday). We’ve also been busy improving the site in other ways.

  • Our upgrade to Ektron 8.7 is complete. Over the fall, 40 different fixes were implemented to fix upgrade issues, from login problems to extra spaces being inserted in content. That doesn’t mean this version Ektron is trouble-free (our last version had its issues, too). But we are down to seven high-priority issues. For five of those, we are waiting for fixes from the Ektron company in a future software update.
  • Transition to MyIUP. Thanks to all our web maintainers for their help in changing all of our URSA links into MyIUP links throughout the site.
  • New look for calendar event listings. Click on an event in any CMS calendar and you get a much-improved event listing. For instance, check out the listing for the 2014 College Technology Day.
  • The transition from viewmasters to carousels is ongoing. Carousels are easier to maintain and they work on mobile devices (which makes up 19 percent of our overall web traffic and 29 percent of our admissions traffic).
  • Social media callout box additions. The social media callout box now provides icons for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Vine, Instagram, Google+, Pinterest, and Tumblr.

Whether you just want a refresher or if you’re new to Ektron, our web training sessions are scheduled every month. Registration is required.

New Workshop: Content Strategies to Kick up Your Impact

Think you’re simply “making web pages”? Not so! You're giving people IUP communications experiences. Are they happy experiences? Do they provide what people want and need and make your department and IUP shine? Learn some tips from communications strategist Deb Klenotic to make your content short, sweet, and strategic.

New Basics

Get introduced to Ektron (the content management system), and learn the basics of how to use it to maintain your site, from updating pages to creating a news post or calendar event.

  • January 22, 1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m.
  • February 5, 9:00–11:00 a.m.
  • February 11, 1:00–3:00 p.m.

Intermediate Training

A follow up to the New Basics, this is intended for web maintainers who have already completed that workshop (or who already have equivalent skills).

  • January 16, 1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m.
  • January 24, 9:00 a.m.–11:00 a.m.
  • February 7, 1:00–3:00 p.m.
  • February 13, 9:00–11:00 a.m.
