Scholars Forum Success Stories: Alexander and Krynock

Are you a student thinking about how you could take your current academic or creative work to the next level? Are you a faculty member reading stellar work produced by your students as the Fall semester comes to a close? We encourage you to consider participating in the 2014 Undergraduate or Graduate Scholars Forums. Here is the first in a series of stories about past students’ work presented at the USF and GSF.

The 2013 Undergraduate Scholars Forum awarded 38 students for their original research, scholarly activities and creative endeavors. The forum, which took place in April, included 53 poster presentations, 67 oral presentations, 18 art exhibits, two musical performances, and several business case studies.

The USF awards ran the gamut of engrossing undergraduate projects. Exercise Science undergraduate students Franklinn Alexander and Cody Krynock won the USF Best Poster Award for their research project, “Slapshot Speeds and the Variables that Affect Them” in the College of Health and Human Services.  As part of their Evaluation class, taught by Richard Hsiao, the two students measured the speed of a hockey slapshot with a radar gun.

Krynock, who was the IUP Men’s Hockey Team assistant coach, utilized the hockey team as experimental subjects for the research. In their experiments, Alexander and Krynock considered variables such as the curve and the stiffness of the hockey stick, the height and weight of each hockey player, and the movement of their backswing.

At first, Alexander said, they considered showing their findings through a PowerPoint presentation, but later realized that a simple trifold poster with eye-catching pictures and graphs would be much better at capturing attention. The two students created straightforward graphics to show their findings to viewers who may not understand the game of hockey.

“Our professor said it went above and beyond the norm,” Alexander said. Alexander came to IUP after serving two stints overseas in Afghanistan and Iraq as a U.S. Marine. He is now pursuing his graduate degree at IUP in Sports Science and Exercise Physiology. He is then planning to pursue a degree in Osteopathic Medicine at Seton Hill. Krynock is now the IUP hockey head coach.

The next forums will be the held April 1 (Undergraduate Scholars Forum) and April 2 (Graduate Scholars Forum), 2014. Students are invited to submit a proposal. A faculty member must sponsor the student’s work and verify the quality of work. The deadline for submissions is February 21, 2014, at 5:00 p.m.
